Music Monday: Randall Kimball

June 29th, 2009

Well by now you all know that I love folk music.  (I promise that next week I'll switch it up.)  In the meantime, I wanted to share with you a track from Randall Kimball.  Raised in Washington, Randall attended Berkley, and spent a lot of time at the Keystone Tavern listening to greats like John Lee Hooker, Jerry Garcia, and the Greg Kihn Band.

He's definitely taken on some of these influences while also bringing in some of his Indian vibes. (He's got Alaskan roots.)

All in all, I think Randall's sound is a great collaboration between genres. Check out "Like the Sun in the Morning:"

Alice Cooper Chats About the Future of the Music Industry

June 22nd, 2009

We had a chance to catch up with none other than Alice Cooper a few weeks ago to pick his brain about the current state of the music industry and where he thinks it might be going.

Alice offers some great advice to young musicians (you've got to be a good live band, among other things), but he also offers up that the internet-and specifically Project Unicorn-may just be the wave of the future.

Check out a few of the clips from the interview (and don't forget to watch his Solid Rock promos while you're at it to find out more about the great organization Alice has founded).

The Sleeping Years: Setting Fires to Sleepy Towns

June 22nd, 2009

Here we meet again on this lovely Monday afternoon.

I'm a big fan of acoustic folk bands from the UK....there's something about an unplugged guitar, a cello, and a British accent that really gets me.  It won't surprise you then to find that The Sleeping Years, a folk group of out the UK, is one of my favorites.

Check out this rendition of "Setting Fires to Sleepy Towns," shot in a quaint little coffee shop.  It will most certainly get you through your Monday, or at least give you five minutes of calm.

African Diaries

June 16th, 2009

I remember when I was younger, explaining to some friends, that when I went to visit family in Nigeria I stayed in a city that wasn't too alien in appearance from other cities, for the most part. Different, undoubtedly, but not too different. House lizards were common, but no Lions or the like wandering nearby. However, seeing TVF's African Diaries and African Odyssey series, I wish I could spend more time out of cities closer in appearance to everywhere else, and in places that are truly unlike anywhere else. At the very least, I know I’d have a field day with my camera. Here’s an episode from the African Diaries series that really showcases how extraordinarily beautiful the environment can be - relaxing and tranquil in a way that is pretty much alien to me. Cue my sigh:

Aside from these series, TVF have a great, varied range of content that you can check out here: http://www.projectunicorn.com/tvf

Extreme Thursdays: Unsalted

June 11th, 2009

One part obsession, one part addiction, and an unending quest for adventure makes Great Lakes surfers a truly rare breed.  Add 40 knots of wind, 10 foot waves, and frigid temperatures to a storm ravenged freshwater sea, and they'll tell you it's a recipe for fun.

Join filmmaker and surfer Vince Deur on a road trip around the five Great Lakes to meet the surfers who have made surfing these stormy waters a way of life for 40 years.

Unsalted reflects an adventure of the spirit, it makes the case for unwavering optimism in the face of adversity,a nd it makes this landlocked group of surfers just a little better for it.

You can check out the film in it's entirety here, but in the mean time check out this extra:
