I am loving this sketch comedy group out of LA, Tomboys in Fishnets. They're some seriously dynamic damsels...but don't let my feeble attempt at alliteration fool you...you won't find these ladies in distress. In fact, they're launching an all-out attack on the world of sketch comedy.
Their sketches are smart, provocative. These women, who came together in late 2000, are no doubt defying the "women aren't funny" stereotype...and they look fantastic doing it.
Check out one of their latest, "Happy Hour," a potentially saddening, but strikingly accurate commentary on the idiosyncrasies of ladies night:
It's a fantastic little music video for the Swedish indie folk group The Oklahoma Trio. Directed by Genevieve Baily, it was shot at Strahov in Prague...the world's largest abandoned sports stadium.
It's a simple song and a pretty simple video, but it's simultaneously melancholy and playful, which I love.
In this week's Extreme Thursday, we're bringing you this clip from Bite TV's Rippin It and Lippin It.
Watch as host Renee Paquette chats with Emil Barday and Mike Moris from The Friendly Skateboard Team (and check out the seriousld gnarly inguries) at Ripley's Urban Rail Park.
The Friendly Skateboard Team are some seriously cool guys. They spend Tuesday afternoons teaching young kids in the community...giving back is the new black.
I just came across this article about a recent study done at Glasgow Caledonian University. The study found that people who were listening to their favorite tunes felt less pain and could stand pain for a longer period of time.
I've already mentioned how music can lighten my mood, and while I'm no scientist, I definitely think pain researcher Laura Mitchell is onto something here.
I mean, who hasn't used music to ease worries, dry tears, or soothe anger? Music is used so often to deal with emotional pain, so it's only a short ride on the logic express to think that it might be effective in dealing with physical pain as well. Rock on Ms. Mitchell.
(For the record, I do NOT recomend that you test this theory on your own time....but keep up the jams.)
Most of you should have noticed our players look a litte wonky (more on the technical in a bit), so I wanted to take a minute to fill you in on what's going on around here.
Earlier this week, I promised you guys some big announcements from Unicorn Media. Well here it is: UnicornMedia.com has relaunched as Project Unicorn.
Unicorn Media will still be around, housing the business-to-business platform solution side of the company...allowing media companies to utilize the amazing tools that we have in place at Project Unicorn. (If you're interested in learning more, please contact us here.)
So what does this mean for you? It means a new look and feel to the site and a return to the old school uniorn logo (vintage is totally in)...but with the same cool features and technology.
I'll be updating the players here at UnicornSightings, and keep a look out for a new look here at Unicorn Sightings. (Thanks in advance for your patience.)
The U is a pretty fantastic place to work (don't mind my gloating). We're big fans of Rock Band and have been known to challenge each other to impromptu mid-morning ping pong matches, but there are some days that we all just spend a little too much time chained to our desks. Hey...we know how to play, but we work hard too.
...which is why I'm loving this: Diet.com's Office Workouts. It's just five minutes of some fantastic little exercizes that you can do right at your desk. In fact, I'm doing them right now. Check it:
Well here we are again folks. It's Monday...which probably means several things, but most importantly, it's time for New Music!
This week's track comes from the band Woodward. The groups hails from Detroit, Michigan, and their sounds is incredibly rich....it's pretty amazing there are only four of them.
So here's a little taste off their album ...But Your Kids are Gonna Love It. It's a great album, and it was seriously hard to pick one track, but "Rest Your Head" is certainly up there. Check it out:
Don't let the name fool you...this is no kissing game.
Emmy-award winning Tad Low (of Pop-Up Video fame) founded Spin the Bottle in 1995, bringing its all original, non-fiction, short-form series to households and audiences across multiple platforms...including of course Unicorn Media.
Low's content is full of ironic sensibility...simultaneously critiquing and celebrating popular culture. It's smart. It's funny..and it's quick enough to watch during your lunch break.
Check out this episode of Phly, "Hamburgler".
Like what you see? Be sure to head over to Unicorn Media to check out more from Low and the rest of the Spin the Bottle gang.
This morning, popping into my nearby convenience store to pick up my daily RockStar, someone actually said to me, "Looks like you have a case of the Mondays!" Seriously? Not only is that movie reference like ten years old, its rude. It's like telling someone they look "tired"... and we all know what that really means.
So I got to thinking. Mondays are stereotypically heinous lovely days...why not make them a bit better? So this week we're launching a little snack to get you through your Monday morning afternoon. (Give me a break, it is Monday after all.)
Today is the first installment of...drum roll please..."New Music Mondays."
Our first musicians are The Gay Blades. A trash rock duo out of Jersey, these guys know how to put on a seriously good show. So cheer up, and rock out to their latest O Shot.
