Music Review: Bayonics
Bayonics
Self-titled
Using a wide range of genres including reggae, hip hop, jazz, rock and a bit of Latin flavor thrown in, Bayonics takes elements of each and comes up with a fresh sound of their own. Hailing from the Bay Area, the 10-piece group comes from a great lineage of horn-infused greats (Tower of Power anyone?).
Their debut features tracks such as the reggae influenced “Sensi” with lines like “As the morning rise I need a little prescription.” It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what they’re singing about.
They give a nod to the hot music scene in Miami and its rich musical heritage with “Aye Miami” then get back into the swing with “La Kancha” a ranking ska-influenced tune that quickly melds into a Latin-tinged beat fest. “Time Over Money” has an early Kool and the Gang vibe – it’s low and slow - with the line, “It takes time to make all that money, money takes up all of your time…”They take it down a bit, though, with the MC rapping, “I live by the music die by the music. Pay homage to the creator.”
Whatever the message, it’ll still move the listener. Ultimately, Bayonics brings the house down with a hip-grooving sound.
Bayonics will be appearing at Unicorn’s launch party at SXSW. Want to go? Email us with your information and we’ll add you to the guest list.
